Evaluation

I think the overall project went well but there were areas that could be improved. There was a lot of problems and barriers while completing this. The first of the barriers was I feel we didn't get enough warning of the brief to sort out models, therefore I had problems with models ditching me late notice after I had only asked them in a week in advance. The second one is that there was no flash triggers then when they came they didn't work. And the third was the makeup artists I couldn't do my cinderella shoot because my model could only do that day and the makeup artist walked out before even starting the makeup. I met my ideas by doing everything I intended to do I had all the props and locations and everything turned out how I planned. My ideas first started to change when at first I just decided to do modern day princesses, but as I got further into my research I decided to think about how people look at disney and want that life, but it never happens. So thinking about that I looked up on a lot of things that are effecting the world and people and decided to show it through disney, to show people that there life isn't going to be like a disney film. I also had to not do some of the princess because the models bailed on me last minute. I think the strong points of this whole project was working with the theatrical makeup and working to make the princesses look like princesses. Another strong point was my Pocahontas photo shoot because the model I picked was perfect for the job, also where I set it suited it really well, the shoot and exactly how I wanted it to apart from a few errors. For my final images I think they're strong and fit with what I have done, one of the images a traditional disney photo and the other showing how the world is actually like. I chose these images as my final image because I think they where all the best images for the message I was trying to get across. The frozen one its obvious elsa has frozen anna's face on purpose, which shows they hate each other and this puts across the idea of family arguments and problems that are always going on. The other photo is what they would normally be like if they was in a disney movie all lovely and happy. The alice in wonderland photograph where it is set in the pub I have got the message across about her being on drugs by making her look confused about why is there a cat stood in front of her. The other photo shows what its really like just a crazy land with crazy creatures. The Pocahontas shoot shows online relationships and how you don't find love at first sight these days, so I took the photo with her looking down at her photo to show you normally meet people online. The other photo just shows her for who she actually is in the books and movies a proud confident south american.

Shoot 3

I really enjoyed this shoot. The light outside was very good and not raining. I had the makeup done by a makeup artist and it is absolutely amazing, I'm so glad the person who did it, did it for me. The main shoot was outside and that went really well the only problem is that a couple of them the background is in focus and she isn't. There also was a lot of litter around that I had to remove apart from that it all went fine. Then I went into the studio again the flash trigger wasn't working so the pictures looked yellow but I worked with what I had and the outcome wasn't too bad in the end. The theme I was going for this was true love and how you never find love at first sight anymore. So I had her with a phone trying to show that most of it is digital. I think I got this across well because a native american in the time the movie/story was set there would not have been mobile phones and mobile phones are associated we texting, social network and dating sites.

These are the images I have edited. I have made the one that shows the story bright and warm and the one to do with the mobile phone looking more old as it shows what time it is originally meant to be it effect thing.

Shoot 2

I think the actual idea its self was really good, the idea of alice in wonderland and drugs I thinks fits in with the theme quite well. I was unfortunately unable to take a studio light to the pub I was shooting the main photographs in so they are very grainy because I had to use a ISO of 1600, a shutter speed of 1/60 of a second and a aperture of 4f. If i had had the light i would of been really happy with the outcome of the pictures, the pictures themselves are good with the composition and the way I have made my model pose. I was just let down by the lighting and the settings I had to use. The models I picked where right for the shoot they did everything exactly how I had asked them. The theme I was going for was drug use. With these kind of pictures they could be used on a poster or in a magazine to campaign the effects on drugs and why not to use them.

These are the photographs I have edited. I made the one with the cat in the tree just like the movie when the cat is talking to alice in the tree. On the other photo its in a club so it gives the effect of it being a real situation.

Shoot 1

I had a problem with this shoot it was all going to be based in the studio but the flash triggers where not working so the photos turned out quite yellow and not very sharp because I had to use a high ISO, so the picture look grainy. I had to also model for myself which i didn't want to do because that meant i had to have my camera on self timer and had to do the poses. They didn't look as good because if i had a model i could place them and look if the image would actually look right. I think the images themselves are strong its just the white balance and the composition in a lot of the photos. I got the makeup artists to do the makeup i like the way that the anna makeup was done but the elsa makeup was done so orange when i told them to do her very white. I think that ruins the pictures a little bit. The theme of this shoot was family problems and sisters hating each other. It is a contrast between the film as that is about them loving each other. I have got it across by the violence in the photographs.

These are the images I have shot and edited. I am going to use these images in my final thing as part as a book one with a proper image the other one them hating and being frozen.

Exhibition Poster

The layout on this poster is very simple, it has the photograph in the middle, the title at the top and the rest of the information below. I like how the whole poster is black and white apart from certain words that are important. I think this makes it very eye catching and this also makes the important information stand out. The colour that is on the poster is also very balanced. This poster represents the exhibition well by the title standing out and showing you which photographers work it is that is being exhibited. Also the photo is one of his well known images. This is a good photograph to use on the poster because it is a well known celebrity who people look up to, another resin its a good photo is because of its composition and the fact she looks like she's gazing write at you, to the viewers this is visually appealing. It is obvious that the designer has put a lot of thought into it. On the poster some of the text is larger then others, it is obvious that the designer has done this on purpose, the larger text is the most important it draw the people to the poster its normally the title, date, where it is held and the cost. The smaller text is normally about websites and stuff also sponsors.

This poster is very simple but also not at the same time. The designer has used two of the images and sandwiched the title in between them both and then added the extra information to the bottom. I like the colours he has used in this he has used a black background with red and white writing. I think he may have used the red writing as the title because it makes it stand out as the rest of the poster is in black and white. I think they have done the other text in white and a lot smaller for it still to stand out but for the people looking at the poster to maybe think oh i wonder what that says and get closer to it. I think the poster relates to the exhibition well because the designer has included a image from each of the photographers. The images are quite weird so that sort of makes you want to see more they're not the type of standard portraits you see.

First attempt at poster.

This was my first attempt at the poster. I added a image I might potentially be using, then I added a crystallize effect to the image so the people can't see what the actual image looks like. I added the names down the left hand side and the picture on the right so then it was balanced. There was a lot of space under and about the photo so it didn't look quite balanced so I added the title on top and the date and the place below. I did everything in black and white and the picture in color so people would be attracted to it. When I was adding the text I thought a lot about what font I was doing it I didn't want it to be a font people couldn't read so I went with 'Geneva'. I then dragged a picture of their logo onto the image and made it the size I wanted it. I think I have challenged the perspective of this poster by distorting the image so they're not to sure what its actually about and it makes them think about it.

Second attempt at poster.

This was my second attempt at the poster. I didn't like the fact the image was surrounded with writing I think it needed to be more isolated, this is why I have placed everything how I have. I didn't want the image to be really obvious so I cut certain bits out to create loads of boxes with a little bit of the photo in it. I have used the same font as last time apart from on the title I have made it bold so it stand out, so it will catch peoples eye. I didn't think it worked listing the names so I decided to just put them in a paragraph and I think it worked a lot better it filled the space more so there was less gaps. I added the logo in the same place. I think this challenges the perspective because it will make people wonder about the image and isn't obvious as I could have cut out a important part of it.

Third attempt at poster.

The first attempt on my final poster I decided to do it all black and white instead of the important information. At first I chose green then I changed my mind.

This was my second attempt at my final poster. I didn't really like the way that the poster was portrait so I decided to do it landscape instead. I liked that in my last poster the image was on its own so i decided to do that again on the left side. I have added the fresco effect on the image to make it look more like a painting and it would make you think about what is install in the actual exhibition. I thought if everything was in black and white and the main information in a bold colour to draw peoples attention in.

Modern Society

Cinderella:
I am basing this line of work on divorce and relationships. So therefore I have been looking up some statistics for this field. I have found out that 40-50% of people get divorced. It is said that 1 in 5 people cheat when in a relationship. Estimating that 44% of men and 36% of women who are married have been unfaithful at some point.

http://www.apa.org/topics/divorce/

http://www.nbcnews.com/id/17951664/ns/health-sexual_health/t/many-cheat-thrill-more-stay-true-love/

Frozen:
I am basing this line of work on family issues. So i have been researching how many families have issues. I haven't found a certain website that talks about the figures but from what i have read near enough every family has their issues. Whether it be them hating each other, money, food, clean water or illness etc.

Alice in Wonderland:
I am basing this work on drugs and the effects it can have. Because of this i have looked into some research about it. It is said that in america alone there is about 9.4% of there population that abuse them.

Pocahontas:

I am basing this work on social media and that it isn't just bumping into someone and falling
in love like disney tell us it is. We rely a lot on social media and technology to get to know the people we fall in love with. I have done some research on this and i have found out that, some 22% of 25-34 year olds and 17% of 35-44 year olds have used an online dating site or mobile dating app. 8% of 45-54 year olds and 10% of 18-24 year olds are online daters. This shows how much has changed through the years.

Project Plan

Fairytales

The Photograph
For my photograph I'm going to take a series of models and make them get into costumes to do with Disney charters. But there is a twist, I am not going to use the traditional makeup or clothing I'm going to make it a lot more modern. For example if I was to take cinderella and the prince instead of picturing the shoe on a stair case or something it would be her taking it off because she couldn't walk in it or something. I think this is challenging the perspective by taking something so traditional and changing it. Its sort of like making it a comedy version but still dreamy. I am going to base the photographs on the Disney films:
  • Cinderella
  • Pocahontas
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Frozen
The models I am using are mainly acting and musical theatre students. Im going to take my models to different places to take the photographs. Depending on the story and the scenes I come up with i will go to different places, but for all of them I am going to go into the studio or theatre and use a smoke machine to create a more dreamy effect. The photos in the studio would be more like advertising photographs. For some like cinderella I am going to go into a council estate as if cinderella has just broke up with someone and everything is wrong with her like then she comes across this boy that she ends up falling in love with but he also has connections and isn't just any boy.  Alice in wonderland will be trying to show a message about abusing drugs but in a comedy sort of way. Pocahontas I'm not sure what story to do with that yet. And frozen instead of the sisters loving each other them hating each other. I am going to hopefully use a ISO 100, aperture of around 4 and the shutter speed will vary. I am buying the costumes from charity shops and borrowing things off people. I am going to try and keep my budget at about £30. The makeup os going to be quite abstract like from below. I have been influenced by Rankin to do the over the top big makeup. The whole work is based on the photographer Annie Leibovitz and her work for disney. The places I'm going to take the photos include:
  • Woods
  • Studio
  • A council estate
  • bar
  • field
I am going to need to bring certain equipment including a tripod, extra batteries, extra memory card and my models. I am going to be using various props for my shoots for example:
Cinderella I'm going to be using shoes and probably a bag.
Frozen I'm not going to use any props from what i know.
Alice in wonderland I'm going to use a deck of cards, dice and a lamp tern with a candle thing. And for Pocahontas i don't think I'm going to use any. The message I'm going to try portray is that not everything ends with a happy ending.

The charity shops.

My target audience for this is young adults and even maybe adults with problems. I am trying to get a point across through all of the pictures and through princesses. I used princesses because everyone looks up to them and if they saw a poster relating to issues within their lives it might potentially make them want to sort it out. I can see these images being made into awareness posters or magazines trying to influence people to see to the problems they have. They could be used for a charity or something like that. If I got employed doing something like this it could be good money because if people see you're work about they might ask you to do things like it etc.

Panorama

Landscape Panorama

This is the final outcome of the panorama I created. To created this fist of all I had to:

Open up photoshop go to 'file' go down to automate and then to photomerge.

Then you go into browse and select the images you have taken. ( keep layout at auto)

When I opened it the edges where a bit rough so I had to crop it to ensure all the edges where straight.

I don't really think i like this technique because I just think the photograph looks stretched and unnatural. I can understand why photographers do it but I personally wouldn't pick to do this. The exposure is good on this photo and I think I did well at keeping a steady hand. If I do it again I would defiantly use a different location.

Panoramas are an interesting way of of showing landscapes because you can get more into the photo. It also changes what the place actually looks like and gives it a different look. It challenges the perspective by stretching the photo and straightening corners.

Research

Harold Edgerton - Still life
Im not to sure wether I like these photos or not I'm quite undecided about them, because I don't know wether I like the way he has done it or not they look weird. Also in a way you could also question if it is still life because the objects are moving and are only still in the photograph because of how fast the shutter speed was. He uses a variety of different objects mainly food or drink, he uses a bullet or something like that to shoot quickly into the food/drink/object to make the unusual effects of the photograph. This isn't the normal still life images you would see these objects are being obstructed.  I think his use of color and the way he does it is very interesting and unordinary. You can tell he would have to have a quick reaction because as soon as that bullet or whatever goes through he has to wait for that exact moment that they collide. He has done it well with the composition and the colors and is all done very technically well done but the photos don't appeal to me. He is obviously trying to capture something the human eye doesn't normally see, he has
succeeded with it. If I was to do something like this I would do it with different objects for example ice-cream or something
like that.

Still life
Still life is usually a basic picture of a object. To get a good picture of a still life photo you need to think a lot about lighting. Sometimes people challenge still life and do it completely different to what it would normally be like to stand out.

Landscape Photography
Charlie Waite
I do really like this photo, its the way he has composes them. He uses a lot of leading lines in his work and just lines in general, wether they're vertical or horizontal. I have noticed also in his photos that there is always something right in the center on the photo either light or a object. You can tell with a lot of his photos that he had to wait for the right time. Patience is important in this kind of photography For example if it was a cloudy day on some of his shoots then he would of waited till the sun was completely out. He would have had to plan it all before he went out and actually did it. He uses a variety of different landscapes some are in forests, some in fields, some of mountains and some even urban landscape photography. He makes these images look interesting and different with the use of line that he uses. You can tell he has probably taken a lot of time to go out and shoot these until he got the image that he wanted. He has definitely considered his composition and the angles he has taken the photo as you can tell some of them aren't taken straight on. You can tell he is capturing the places he has gone to and made it look different to what it would look like if we was just going to go to that place. If I was to do something like this I would defiantly try and use the lines like he has it has made the images more interesting to look at and you can tell they're very technically well done.

In landscape photography you would use a large aperture of something like f22 to ensure the depth of field is right. You would also usually us a tripod for this so you can ensure you get a sharp image and so you can slightly move it.  Landscape Is usually don't in places with a lot of nature. This type of landscape photography requires a lot of time, you have to take your time with the shots because you have to make sure the lighting is right that the angle you have is right and that nothing is in the shot that you don't want to be there. The photographers that normally photograph this are trying to show you and enhance the beauty of the world/beauty. Another type of landscape photography is urban photography. This is where the photographer goes out and takes the photograph onto the streets for they're like streets and stuff like that. With these photos it takes time and to get the right angle, because you could be ready to take a shot and someone walks into it and you take the photo, then if you take it as soon as they're out of the shot it becomes a completely different photograph. A lot of photographers use large format camera for this type of photography because the depth of field is so sharp and the negatives are that big that the detail is immaculate.

Thomas Albdorf
I really like his work because it is different to what normal photographers would normally do. It challenges normal landscape photography by placing unnatural things into the environment. He has used a square format film camera, then he has also drawn something onto some acetate or some transparent material. He has also used a wire to pin them up but he has also pinned up random colored fabric on a wire or string or something like that. The thing I find really interesting about this work is the way that the scenery its self isn't very nice that all but the fact he has added this random thing into the photograph make you focus more on that then the background its self. You joust think to yourself oh that doesn't look normal. If i was to produce some work inspired by this I would bace the objects on something like a pair of sock and hang them over a washing line in the center of the photo but do it in different places not just woods. So it would be like hanging your clothes out on a washing line but in random places you would never see it.

Todd Hido
I really like the way that this photographer had changed the perspective of normal landscape photography. He challenges normal landscape photography by taking photographs through car windows whatever the weather. He takes the photographs the places or subjects at whatever speed he is going so if he is going fast he will still take the photo and you can tell by the blur of the photo. Some of his photos that are taken the day has obviously been foggy, rainy, sunny or snowing it varies throughout his work. The thing that makes me interested about his work is the fact he goes out in any weather, it makes you awake that a picture doesn't only look good on a sunny day, it can look good in any weather as long as you get the right shot. If I was to so something like this I think it would be interesting to do it more urban landscape photography and on a train so when you are going into train stations on the train etc.

Studio

Annie Leibovitz - Portraiture I really like this work because it bring back a lot of memories for me personally as a child. I was a huge Disney fan and still am know, these photographs are amazing. The way she has brought the cartoon characters to life but still made the photos so child like and almost animated. She used models in her work but sometimes its just well known people for example Johnny Depp, Taylor Swift and Russel Brand. For example Johnny Depp was featured in the Pirates of the Caribbean as the main and she has used him in her photos. She takes a lot of photos and makes the model do a lot of work and moving about until she knows she has the perfect shot for the final outcome to be completed. You can tell she has thought about the composition in her photographs because they're very well thought out and planned before she has actually taken them. Also if you look at the photos above nothing clashes it is all very well organised. I think her use of color is amazing and nothing looks out of place. She uses quite a simple lighting set up takes the photo and then gives it to the editing team to make it look magical. I think she photographs a lot of her work in the studio but if there is a shot that with editing work would look good outside she will take them outside like the once below. I think she was trying to capture something special with the photos. Something that both children and adults would smile at and look up to. A word to describe these photos are breathtaking because they're making the people who kids look up to and not changing the setting they're in so children still believe in it all. If I was to shoot something like this I would have to consider the people I would need to help me with this i.e makeup artists, costume designers, set constructors and people to help me edit. I would also have to think of what message I want to put across either it being a magical one or a fashion based one or maybe something else, maybe advertising or just to illustrate something or a article.

Outside

Tanyth Berkeley
I really lilt this work because it is quite dreamy and very well composed. She has made them just a little bit overexposed but I think she has done this to add a dreamy effect to it. She has obviously not used models for her work but i don't know if she has seen them in the street/park and just asked to take a photograph of them or seen them advance and asked them to come and pose. They're obviously posed but they don't look like your average model. You can tell she has thought a lot about the way the models look and the composition and the colors and angles in the photograph. Also when you look at the photo nothing clashes its all soft but none of the colors really clash at all. She photographs most of her photographs outside but if it isn't outside then it is in a messy slump or something. I think she was trying to show that everyone is beautiful or something like that. A word to describe these photos are soft because they're quite soothing to look at and nothing in particular really draws your attention unless they're using a object or something. If I was to do something like this I would use people with pastel colored hair and clothing like that to do it.

 Laura Pannack
The way she has done these photos are amazing. This challenges a normal portrait photo because she has added a sheet of glass in between the lens and the subject to create a sort of soft dreamy effect. The technique she has has used is taking a normal photograph and adding something in front of the subject. The thing I find interesting about her is the fact she made the subjects close their eyes so they didn't know when the photo was being taken so they couldn't react to it. Also the way that it is actually taken it is interesting and weird in the same way. If I was to do something like this I think it would be cool to do it with a piece of colored acetate to make it a different color but give it sort of the same effect.

This is the picture I have taken whilst challenging the perspective of landscapes. I have crossed over urban landscape and natural landscape. This picture is a nice shot. I like the way the red contrasts to the blue sky.

This is the picture i have taken to challenge the perspective of portrait. I have challenged the perspective by taking it through glass this is quite like Laura Pannack. I changed it by using patterned glass and posed the model. I do like this photo with the depth of field etc.

This is a picture I have taken to challenge the perspective of still life. I have challenged it by putting a pen in front of a projector to make a shadow. I do like this image but I think I could do it a lot better.
